I'm one of those people who prefers to own a cd rather than just buying the album on itunes, meaning i didn't have my own itunes account until today. I was given an itunes card for graduation. Obviously, i like music.. actually, it might be a slight obsession.... Anyway, i finally made my own account, bought some of what i wanted. Stupid itunes charges sales tax. One would assume that whoever bought the card would have payed sales tax on it would you not? Hence my confusion, but that's off subject. I wanted to buy two of the Kooks' albums, but i ended up getting Gaslight Anthem's album The '59 Sound and Chuck by Sum 41 and several miscellaneous songs by The Subways, Waylander [irish folk metal! yes, it exists!] and The Wakes.
Okay, now here's the strange part. I turned on Genius. One of the playlists it created is labeled emo. This made me curious, so i played it. So far it has played:
1. Go by BoyslikeGirls [not emo]
2. Six feet Under the Stars by All Time Low [maybe emo, it's stretching it]
3. Pleads and Postcards by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus [i wasn't aware that RJA was even remotely emo]
4. Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin [okay, i'll give them that, emo.]
5. Pieces by Sum 41 [not particularly emo. it's called PUNK, people, PUNK!]
6. Pressure by Paramore [um, no]
7. Jersey by Mayday Parade [definitely not]
8. Watch the Sky by Something Corporate [sort of? i guess.]
9. Up Against a Wall by BoyslikeGirls [uhh.. no]
10. Clouds by The Morning Light [because it says "because somedays it seems like the clouds won't stay away? sort of, but not really.]
Now it's playing You Had Me at Hello by A Day to Remember.
My conclusion: not a bad playlist, but i wouldn't consider it emo. at all.
*edit* i switched to Brit-pop & Rock mix.. it's playing Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson is from Hawaii! it did play some legitimately British bands prior to that: The Subways and Damien Rice.. and The Killers are American.. and Empire of the Sun is Australian so i guess they count as British?
